The average home today has a surprising amount of technology and an increasing number of network devices. Much of the quality of operation of those devices depends on the network. Purchasing high-quality network equipment and configuring it correctly for its intended use will ensure the best performance and reliability possible.
Computing devices like PCs and mobile devices, as well as their owners, face a plethora of security challenges. Effectively addressing these challenges requires a combination of tools and knowledge. Then the tools must be implemented and configured correctly which is another challenge. All of these things can be made much easier by working with a trusted technology advisor.
This brings me to the challenges a technology provider faces with many home customers. Usernames and passwords are the single biggest challenge, and there isn’t even a close second. Many home technology users have a very poor strategy or no strategy at all for securely managing passwords.
Many PC users face challenges completing proper backups and protecting themselves from malware. Successful malware protection requires a combination of knowledge and tools. Backups are about creating a simple enough, repeatable process.
Proactive Technical Support
The best way to have a good experience with technology is to approach some things proactively. This is what information technology in large businesses is all about, but individuals and small companies do not approach things the same way and tend to be very reactive.
My hope is to help people from the beginning of the life of their PC by helping customers choose the right PC and get it set up correctly. This includes documenting the right info and configuring the operating system and applications correctly. I also like to help with the following:
- Install and configure email and office applications
- Install and configure malware protection
- Establish a secure password storage and organization methodology
- Create a repeatable data backup routine
- Educate on Internet security
Pro Home Network
The next level of service I hope to provide is a better home network. Most people will default to the Wi-Fi network provided by their ISP. Some folks will go for whatever looks the best at the local big box store. This approach can work OK depending on the placement of the device and the space where it is located. However, more often than not this strategy results in subpar network performance.
With the help of a network professional and a slightly higher cost you can get a home network that will provide all the features enjoyed by large enterprises. One of the primary examples is the ability to create a mesh network to provide good reception in all the nooks and crannies of your home or office. See this post for more information.
